The Coptic Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in the world, tracing its origins back to Saint Mark, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ, who is said to have founded the church in Alexandria.

The Patriarch of Alexandria is considered to be the successor of Saint Mark and has a prominent role in the leadership and governance of the Coptic Orthodox Church, which has millions of followers worldwide.

The current Patriarch of Alexandria is Pope Tawadros II, who was enthroned on November 18, 2012, following the death of his predecessor, Pope Shenouda III. Pope Tawadros II is the 118th Pope of Alexandria and the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church.

As the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Patriarch of Alexandria is responsible for overseeing the spiritual life and administration of the church, ordaining new clergy, and representing the church in ecumenical and interfaith dialogue with other Christian denominations and religions.

The position of the Patriarch of Alexandria is highly respected among Coptic Orthodox Christians, and the office has a rich history and tradition that dates back many centuries.

The Patriarchate of Alexandria is one of the five ancient patriarchates of the Christian Church, alongside Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, and Jerusalem. The patriarchate played a significant role in the development of early Christianity, particularly in the areas of theology, liturgy, and monasticism.

The Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt has faced various challenges throughout its history, including persecution and discrimination, especially during periods of political instability. Despite these challenges, the church has remained a significant religious institution in Egypt and has also spread to other parts of the world, with significant Coptic communities in North America, Europe, and Australia.

The role of the Patriarch of Alexandria is not limited to the Coptic Orthodox Church alone, as he also serves as the leader of the broader Eastern Orthodox communion in Africa. In this capacity, the Patriarch of Alexandria plays a significant role in promoting ecumenical dialogue and collaboration among different Christian denominations in Africa.

Overall, the Patriarch of Alexandria holds a vital role in the spiritual and social life of Coptic Orthodox Christians, both in Egypt and around the world. The current Patriarch, Pope Tawadros II, has been active in promoting the church’s mission of spreading love, peace, and unity, as well as engaging in interfaith and intercultural dialogue to promote harmony and understanding between different religious and cultural communities.
