Virgin Mary – Who is Mary?

Mary, often referred to as the Virgin Mary or Mother Mary, is a central figure in Christianity.

According to Christian beliefs, Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, who is considered the Son of God and the central figure in the Christian faith. Mary plays a crucial role in the Nativity story, as she is said to have conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit, making her a virgin when she gave birth.

Mary is prominently featured in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament of the Bible. The accounts vary slightly between the Gospels, but they generally agree on Mary’s role in the miraculous conception and birth of Jesus.

Mary is venerated in various Christian traditions, including Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and some Protestant denominations. In Catholicism, Mary holds a special place as the Mother of God and is considered a model of faith, purity, and obedience.

Prayer to the holy Mary

Prayers to the Virgin Mary are common in many Christian traditions, particularly Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. One of the most well-known prayers to Mary is the “Hail Mary,” which is part of the Rosary, a significant prayer devotion in the Catholic Church. Here is the traditional version of the Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us, sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

In addition to the Hail Mary, various other prayers are dedicated to Mary, such as the Memorare, the Angelus, and the Rosary itself. These prayers often seek Mary’s intercession, protection, and guidance.

It’s important to note that praying to Mary or any other saints is primarily a feature of Catholic and Orthodox Christian traditions. Different Christian denominations have varying views on the intercession of saints, and some may not include Mary in their prayers to the same extent.

Virgin Mary birthday

The Christian tradition does not provide a specific date for the birthday of the Virgin Mary in the Bible. The Catholic Church observes the celebration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th. This feast commemorates the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

September 8th was established to counterbalance the celebration of the Feast of the Conception of Mary, which falls on December 8th. The idea is that Mary, conceived without original sin, would be born without sin’s stain nine months later.
