It seeks to understand and articulate what we can know about God based on revelation, primarily through the study of the Bible.
Theology proper seeks to answer questions about God’s nature and character, such as:
- What are God’s essence and being?
- What are God’s attributes and qualities?
- How can we understand and describe God’s nature and actions?
In Christianity, theology proper is often divided into two main categories:
- Theological anthropology, which focuses on God’s relationship to humanity
- Theological cosmology, which focuses on God’s relationship to the universe
Theology proper is an important part of systematic theology, which is the study of the beliefs and teachings of a particular religion. It is concerned with understanding the nature and character of God and how this relates to other areas of theology, such as Christology (the study of Jesus Christ), soteriology (the study of salvation), and eschatology (the study of the end times).
The proper study of theology helps believers better understand and appreciate God’s nature and character and develop a deeper relationship with him. It also helps believers to better understand and articulate their faith to others and to defend their beliefs in the face of challenges or objections.
