According to tradition, the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem was founded by James the Just, the brother of Jesus, in the 1st century AD.

The Patriarchate of Jerusalem is considered to be one of the five major Patriarchates of the Eastern Orthodox Church, along with the Patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Moscow. It is also one of the four ancient Patriarchates, along with those of Rome, Constantinople, and Alexandria.

The position of the Patriarch of Jerusalem is highly respected within the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Patriarch is considered to be the spiritual leader of all Orthodox Christians in the Holy Land. The current Patriarch of Jerusalem is Theophilos III, who was elected in 2005.

The election of the Patriarch is governed by a complex set of rules and traditions. It is overseen by a synod of bishops and other high-ranking church officials and involves a series of rounds of voting and vetting. Once elected, the Patriarch serves for life.

The Patriarchate of Jerusalem is headquartered in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is considered to be the holiest site in Christianity. The church is built on the site where Jesus was crucified and buried and is visited by millions of pilgrims every year. The Patriarchate also oversees a network of churches and monasteries throughout the Holy Land and beyond.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem is one of the largest and most influential Christian communities in the Holy Land and has a long and storied history. The church has survived numerous challenges and upheavals over the centuries, including wars, conquests, and persecutions.

One of the most significant challenges faced by the church in recent times has been the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem has played an important role in efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in the region and has spoken out against violence and injustice on both sides of the conflict.

In addition to its spiritual and pastoral work, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem is also involved in a wide range of charitable and social initiatives. These include providing assistance to the poor and needy, supporting education and healthcare, and promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding.

The position of the Patriarch of Jerusalem is one of great responsibility and honor within the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Patriarch is seen as a symbol of the enduring faith and resilience of the Christian community in the Holy Land and is held in high esteem by Orthodox Christians around the world.
