In Buddhism, Nirvana is the ultimate spiritual goal, a state of enlightenment and release from the cycle of rebirth. The Dharmacakra, or “Wheel of Dharma,” symbolizes this journey towards Nirvana.

Nirvana Buddhism symbol – The Dharmacakra

The eight spokes of the wheel represent the Eightfold Path of Buddhism, which is the path to enlightenment and the attainment of Nirvana. The eight aspects of the path are:

  1. Right understanding: understanding the Four Noble Truths
  2. Right intention: having a pure motivation for spiritual growth
  3. Right speech: speaking truthfully and kindly
  4. Right action: acting ethically and morally
  5. Right livelihood: earning a living in a way that does not harm others
  6. Right effort: making an effort to improve oneself
  7. Right mindfulness: being aware of one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions
  8. Right concentration: practicing meditation to achieve a calm and focused mind

The circle of the wheel represents the completeness and perfection of the teachings of the Buddha and how they work together to lead to Nirvana. The wheel can also be seen as a symbol of the cyclical nature of life and how, by following the path, one can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

The Dharmacakra is often depicted with the Buddha or a bodhisattva sitting in the center, representing that the teachings and examples of the Buddha guide the path to Nirvana.

It’s worth noting that different sects of Buddhism may have different interpretations of the symbol, but the general idea is the same.
