The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is a Pentecostal Christian denomination that began in Nigeria in 1952. It grew from a small local congregation into a large international church network.
Origins in Nigeria
RCCG traces its beginning to Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, a Nigerian pastor who founded the church in Lagos. The denomination’s official history dates its establishment to 1952. Akindayomi led the church until his death in 1980.
Enoch Adejare Adeboye joined RCCG in the 1970s, was ordained as a pastor, and became Akindayomi’s successor. He has served as General Overseer since 1981 and remained in that position in 2026 according to official RCCG materials.
Beliefs and worship
RCCG is part of the wider Pentecostal tradition. Its teaching emphasizes the authority of the Bible, conversion, prayer, holiness, evangelism, the work of the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and expectation of Christ’s return. Worship commonly includes preaching, congregational singing, prayer, testimony, and Pentecostal forms of spiritual practice.
Organization and major programs
The church is organized through parishes, areas, zones, provinces, and wider administrative structures. One of its best-known gatherings is the Holy Ghost Service, associated with the Redemption Camp on the Lagos–Ibadan corridor. RCCG also operates mission, media, education, humanitarian, and social-service programs.
International expansion
RCCG expanded rapidly from the 1980s onward. Nigerian migration, missionary activity, church planting, and transnational networks helped establish congregations across Africa, Europe, North America, Asia, and other regions. Official RCCG sources describe the denomination as present in many countries worldwide.
Because RCCG is large and decentralized across many regions, local congregations may differ in language, music, social setting, and pastoral style while sharing the denomination’s basic Pentecostal identity and organizational connection.
Leadership in 2026
RCCG’s official website continued to identify Pastor E. A. Adeboye as General Overseer of RCCG Worldwide in 2026. The denomination combines centralized leadership and large international programs with a wide network of local parishes.
Religious identity
RCCG belongs to the global Pentecostal and evangelical landscape but has a history and institutional culture shaped strongly by Nigeria. Prayer, fasting, holiness teaching, evangelism, church planting, and expectations of the activity of the Holy Spirit are especially visible in its public identity. Descriptions of individual RCCG congregations should still allow for regional differences rather than assuming every parish is identical.
