The Greek Orthodox Church is a major Christian denomination that is part of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is one of the oldest Christian traditions in the world. It is an autocephalous (self-governing) church, meaning that it has administrative independence from other Orthodox Churches, although it remains in full communion with them.

The Greek Orthodox Church is the largest Christian Church in Greece, and has a significant presence in other countries, particularly in the United States, where there is a large Greek American community.

The Greek Orthodox Church traces its roots back to the time of the apostles, specifically to the missionary work of the apostle Andrew in the region of Byzantium (modern-day Istanbul, Turkey). Over time, the Church in Byzantium developed its own liturgical and theological traditions, which became the basis for the Eastern Orthodox Church. After the fall of the Byzantine Empire in the 15th century, the Church in Greece became autocephalous, with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople recognizing the independence of the Church of Greece in 1850.

The Greek Orthodox Church follows the Byzantine liturgical tradition and recognizes the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as its spiritual leader. The Church places a strong emphasis on liturgical worship and sacramental life, including the sacraments of baptism, Chrismation (confirmation), the Eucharist, confession, matrimony, holy orders, and anointing of the sick. It also places great importance on the veneration of saints and the use of icons, which are considered to be “windows to heaven” that help believers connect with the divine.

The Greek Orthodox Church is known for its rich cultural heritage, which includes the preservation of ancient liturgical hymns, sacred music, and liturgical dance. It is also known for its strong monastic tradition, which has produced many influential saints and spiritual leaders throughout the centuries.

Today, the Greek Orthodox Church continues to play a significant role in the spiritual and cultural life of Greece, as well as in the lives of Greek Orthodox communities around the world. It remains a dynamic and vibrant expression of the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition and continues to be a source of spiritual guidance and support for millions of people around the world.
