The 2026 list reflects Open Doors’ own research framework and reporting period. It should be cited as that organization’s ranking, not as an uncontested universal index of religious freedom.

We also compare it with the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which evaluates freedom of religion or belief more broadly across religious and nonreligious communities.

What the World Watch List measures
Open Doors combines information about pressure on Christians in private life, family life, community life, national life, and church life with reported incidents of violence. Its researchers use country experts and field information to build a composite score.
For the 2026 reporting period, Open Doors says more than 388 million Christians experienced high levels of persecution or discrimination. It recorded 4,849 Christians killed for faith-related reasons, 4,712 detained, and 3,632 churches or Christian public properties attacked or closed.
Persecution is not the same as one simple cause
The conditions behind these rankings differ sharply. In some countries, state authorities criminalize or heavily restrict Christian activity. Elsewhere, clan pressure, extremist violence, civil war, organized crime, discriminatory law, or social hostility may be more important. In Nigeria and Syria, for example, conflict can create overlapping risks in which religious identity is one factor among several.
How USCIRF differs from Open Doors
USCIRF is an independent U.S. government commission that assesses freedom of religion or belief rather than Christian persecution alone. Its 2026 recommendations include countries it believes meet statutory thresholds for “Countries of Particular Concern” or a “Special Watch List.” These categories are not meant to reproduce the Open Doors ranking.

You’ve read about nations in crisis, churches under fire, and believers who have lost everything for Christ—and yet still sing. But this is more than a global issue. It is a personal one. The same Jesus who walks with the persecuted is calling you today.
He is not just the Savior of the persecuted—He is the Savior of sinners.
He is not only the strength of martyrs—He is the rescue of the lost.
And right now, wherever you are, He is near.
The World Hated Him First
Jesus Christ knows what it means to suffer. He was falsely accused, betrayed, mocked, beaten, and nailed to a cross. He was killed not because He did wrong—but because He did right. He loved too boldly. He healed too freely. He forgave too completely.
“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.”

And yet He endured the cross—for you.
Why?
