Thich Nhat Hanh – Zen Master for Peace

Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced “Tick-Nyot-Hahn”) is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, author, teacher, and peace activist.

Thich Nhat Hanh’s birth name was Nguyen Dinh Lang, later changed to Nguyen Xuan Bao. He was born on October 11, 1926, in Hue, Vietnam.

At 16, Thich Nhat Hanh became a monk in the Vietnamese Zen tradition at Tu Hieu Temple in Hue and later studied at a Buddhist university in Saigon.

Thich Nhat Hanh became a monk in 1949. He was ordained as a Bhikkhu, or fully ordained monk, in 1951. He is known for his skill in meditation and teaching.

In the 1960s, Thich Nhat Hanh became an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War and was involved in efforts to bring peace to his country. He founded the School of Youth for Social Service, a Buddhist organization that provided aid to war refugees and helped rebuild villages destroyed by the war. He also spoke out against the policies of the North Vietnamese and the South Vietnamese governments.

In 1966, Thich Nhat Hanh traveled to the United States to speak out against the war and to promote peace. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1967, and the following year he established the Plum Village meditation center in France, where he currently resides.

Thich Nhat Hanh has written over 100 books on mindfulness, meditation, and Buddhist philosophy, many of which have been translated into numerous languages. He is perhaps best known for his book “The Miracle of Mindfulness,” which has helped introduce millions of people to meditation.

The United Nations have also recognized him for his peace and human rights contributions.

His work has been particularly important in helping people cope with stress and anxiety. Thich Nhat Hanh passed away on January 22, 2022, at Tu Hieu pagoda, Hue city. Thich Nhat Hanh’s death is a great loss to the Buddhist community and the world. His teachings on mindfulness, peace, and compassion have inspired millions of people worldwide and will continue to have a lasting impact for generations to come.
