One of the most well-known calendars used before the Julian calendar was the Roman calendar, which was used by the Romans until the Julian calendar was introduced. The Roman calendar was based on the phases of the moon and had ten months, with a total of 304 days. The months were Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December.
Another calendar that was used before the Julian calendar was the Egyptian calendar, which was based on the cycles of the Nile River and the movements of the stars. The Egyptian calendar had 12 months of 30 days each, with an additional five days added at the end of the year.
Other calendars used before the Julian calendar include the Babylonian, Chinese, and Mayan calendars, among many others.
